We are asking parents to bring their children to the photographer. Please select a time when your student is NOT in class.

You are welcome to bring your children who attend a different school. We can capture individual photos of each child and a photo of the children together. We are unable to do family portraits on a school photo schedule. I am happy to schedule your family portraits on a different day!

Pictures will be in the garden/labryinth area behind the school by the fountain. Please check in with my assistant when you arrive and then wait with your child/children in the labyrinth area and we will call you over. Parents will be asked to wait away from the photography area while their child is being photographed. Kids get confused where to look when parents are present, and don’t know whose instruction to follow. We have found that it’s much easier for the children when parents are not watching. (You can often just hide behind the stone fountain.)

That being said, you might get called over to help if your little one is stressed or can’t find their smile.

We are unable to clean faces, comb hair, or otherwise fix up a child’s appearance. Be prepared to have your child’s hair and face in camera-ready condition at the time of photos.

Let’s avoid using the words “cheese” or “I want your real smile” while photographer is interacting with your children. The more pressure kids feel to perform the less likely we will get a great smile. Tickling, teasing, or playing with kids is a much better way to elicit a natural expression. Allow the photographer to guide the photos, posing, and expression. We will call you over if we need additional support.

Please make sure to give me your child’s name on the signup. Feel free to put more than one name in that slot if you have multiple kids, just make sure you change the quantity of kids to the correct amount.

The school strongly prefers that students are dropped off and picked up at normal times. We urge you to signup for a time slot outside of your scheduled class time unless you student will be absent that day.



Preparing for picture day

Images will be taken outdoors, weather permitting. Assume portrait day is happening unless we have active precipitation, temperatures under 45 degrees, or wind over 10MPH.

Kids generally do better when parents are not present. With younger children, separation can cause a ton of anxiety. Be prepared for this to happen. If you have a strategy for this, let’s employ it for portrait day. Often when parents are hovering, kids will want to hang onto mom or dad, or become suddenly very needy. Experience says it’s generally better if you drop kiddo with us and walk away. If that’s totally not working, then we will ask you to join us or to remain. Occasionally, happy pictures are just not possible. Stoic is often very beautful, don’t be bummed if your child decides not to smile for photos. However, if your child is extremely unhappy, you are welcome to come back and try again at a different time. We are unable to spend more than about 5 minutes with each child. If you child is really afraid, attached, or otherwise unwilling to participate in photos, we will have to move on to the next child. You are aways welcome to come back and try again at a different time.

Here’s how to prepare:

  • Bright colors are great for photos

  • Avoid neon/dayglow colors and shirts with big words

  • Photos are usually close-up, so focus on clothing above the waist, but we usually get a few pics of the whole body.

  • If your child wears transitions eyewear, please bring a pair of regular, glare-resistant glasses to school for portrait day or remove the glasses for pictures.  Transitions lenses look like sunglasses outdoors, great for the eyes, not so great for photos.

  • Wipe face, comb hair, straighten clothing right before you send your child to the photographer.

  • Tell your child this is going to be fun!
